SUSTAINABLE TIP OF THE MONTH
LEAVE YOUR LEAVES
Skip the bags and save yourself the back pain of raking. The fall colors are overhead and soon will be piling up on our yards below. Rotting leaves don’t belong in a landfill, they serve a multitude of purposes when left in place:
Leaves are a mulching layer that offers soil erosion protection and improved soil quality.
Leaf litter also provides a habitat for many pollinators and 94% of caterpillars.
Bagged leaves that end up in landfills generate methane, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 84 times greater than CO2.
